Japan Nuclear Power Plants Unstable After Earthquake

By William Kearney

March 14 - The failure of cooling systems at nuclear reactors damaged by the devastating earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11 have prompted wide-scale evacuations as operators work to cool the reactors and prevent further releases of radiation. Three reports from the National Research Council’s Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board may be informative to the rapidly unfolding events in Japan: Safety and Security of Commercial Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage; Health Risks from Exposure to Low Levels of Ionizing Radiation (BEIRV VII); and Distribution and Administration of Potassium Iodide in the Event of a Nuclear Incident. In addition, staff members from the board also work in Hiroshima, Japan, at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation, a joint U.S.-Japan project established decades ago to monitor the health of atomic-bombing survivors and their offspring.
